We asked the popular ForumIAS Community Member Yo_Yo_Choti_Singh ( Vijay Wardhan, who has secured Rank 104 ) this year, as to why he able to clear the exam in this attempt – about the 5th one.

“I never completed my paper in previous attempts as I have a slow handwriting. This year I completed the paper, so I was confident that I will get into the list.”

Vijay is not alone.

Shreyans Kumat, who secured Rank 4 this year, diligently wrote the ForumIAS Simulator Tests Mains last year.  You can view his copies here, here, here and here.

We have observed that writing Mains Simulator Tests about 10-15 days before the Mains Exam helped candidates

  • increase their writing speed
  • deal with the stress of the exam ( given that exam is a back to back 5 days affairs, requiring one to write for 6 hours/day )
  • and learn to do time management accordingly.

Why waste time 10 days before the Mains?

Those of us who have written the Mains before know few things:

One, our writing speed is slow in the beginning, but increases after 1-2 days of writing the test. For example, nearly everyone writing the first mains leaves some questions because of time management issues. However, after writing GS papers, the speed increases, time management skills develop, but by that time the exam is over!
Two,

It requires certain grit to write the exam on all five days given that (a) we have to commute to some place far (b) do not have food availability on the day of the exam – as most of us stay far from home.
We invite you to write the Mains with us before you write it for CS ( Mains ) on September.
We”ll be doing GS Paper 1,2,3,4 + Essay + Optional so that you get used to the exam, especially if it your first Mains.
The Test shall be held in  10+ Centres across the country.
